The brief

What we were asked for

Street food traders at events lose money to queues. The brief was a platform where a customer scans a code, orders from their phone, and the trader works a screen instead of shouting across a hatch — sold as a product to hundreds of independent traders rather than built once for one business.

The challenge

What made it difficult

The constraints that shaped every decision after them.

  • Every trader needed their own branded storefront, menu and payment account — but on one codebase we could deploy in seconds.
  • Events happen where signal is poor, so the ordering flow had to be light and tolerant of bad connections.
  • Traders are not technical. Onboarding had to take minutes, with no jargon and no support call.
  • Money had to reach the trader directly, not sit in a pooled account waiting to be distributed.

What we built

How we solved it

The decisions that mattered, and why we made them.

01

Multi-tenant from the first commit

Middleware resolves the incoming host to a tenant, so every trader gets NAME.eventifood.com automatically and can point their own domain at the platform. Custom domains are provisioned programmatically against the hosting API, certificates and all.

02

Four payment routes, one checkout

Stripe Connect for card payments with direct payout to the trader, plus PayPal, GoCardless and SumUp, and a manual override for cash at the hatch — all reconciled through the same order record.

03

A live kitchen board

Orders arrive on a screen in the van, ordered by promised time, with audible alerts and one-tap status changes. No printer, no paper, no shouting.

04

A seller back office that owners actually use

Menu builder with option groups and pricing, opening hours, event scheduling, reporting and end-of-day summaries by email — all designed for a phone in one hand.

The outcome

Where it got to

  • Traders onboard themselves and are taking orders on their own subdomain the same day.
  • The same platform architecture has since been forked into three further verticals.
  • Payments settle directly to each trader, removing us from the money flow entirely.
